Two-Family House

The commission for a two-family house in Caldas das Taipas corresponds to the client's desire to build, on a plot of land occupied by an old single-family dwelling, a house adequate to the current needs of each of the two sons.
The project starts with the response to pragmatic aspects such as the scarcity of space and the lack of privacy of the lot, located in a high traffic street bordering a warehouse located at a higher elevation. Given these circumstances the first premise of the project corresponded to the delimitation of the private area with a high masonry wall that takes full advantage of the stone used in the existing dwelling. The house occupies at the ground floor the whole width of the lot creating a common anterior courtyard and two private courtyards at the back that function as an extension of the common areas of each of the houses, sheltered from prying eyes. Large skylights ensure the necessary illumination of the distribution spaces. The upper floor where the dormitories are arranged presents itself to the passer-by as a large white volume, contrasting in texture, materials and openings with the blind masonry walls, which represent at the ground level the only visible architecture elements. The rhythm of the openings and the stereotomy of the facade confer scale the building, making indistinct the separation of the two houses perceived as one single project.
A encomenda para uma habitação bifamiliar nas Caldas das Taipas corresponde ao desejo do cliente em edificar num terreno ocupado por uma antiga moradia unifamiliar uma casa adequada às necessidades actuais para cada um dos dois filhos.
O projecto parte da resposta a aspectos pragmáticos como a escassez de espaço e a falta de privacidade do lote, localizado numa rua de grande tráfego e confinante com um armazém situado numa cota mais elevada. Tendo em conta estas circunstâncias a primeira premissa do projecto correspondeu à delimitação da área privada com um muro alto em alvenaria que aproveita integralmente a pedra da antiga moradia existente. A casa ocupa ao nível do rés-do-chão toda a largura do lote criando um pátio anterior comum e dois pátios privativos nas traseiras que funcionam como uma extensão das áreas comuns de cada uma das casas, resguardada dos olhares indiscretos. Grandes claraboias asseguram a iluminação necessária dos espaços de distribuição. O piso superior onde se dispõem os dormitórios apresenta-se para o transeunte como um grande volume branco, contrastante ao nível da textura, dos materiais e das aberturas com as paredes cegas de alvenaria, que se assumem ao nível do rés-do-chão como os únicos elementos visíveis de arquitectura. O ritmo dos vãos e a estereotomia da fachada conferem escala ao edifício, tornando indistinta a separação das duas habitações e permitindo uma leitura una do projecto.
